Bablu Gupta Becomes Nepal’s Youngest Minister, Symbolizing Rise of Gen-Z Leadership

Kathmandu | October 26, 2025

Nepal has witnessed a generational shift in politics with the appointment of Bablu Gupta, a 28-year-old social activist from Siraha, as the country's Minister for Youth and Sports. His induction came on Sunday as Prime Minister Sushila Karki expanded her cabinet, marking one of the most talked-about moves in recent Nepali politics.

Gupta, known for his grassroots activism and humanitarian work, is the founder of the volunteer organisation "100 Group", which has gained national attention for initiatives such as free food distribution, clothing drives, and community education programs—especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Long before entering politics, Gupta had become a familiar name among youth circles for his outspoken stance on accountability and civic responsibility. His active involvement in the Gen-Z movement, a wave of youth-driven activism that has challenged Nepal's traditional political establishment, made him a natural symbol of the new generation's aspirations.

Political observers say his appointment is both symbolic and strategic. By bringing a young activist into government, the Karki administration signals an effort to bridge the widening trust gap between Nepal's youth and its political leadership. Gupta's elevation is also being hailed as a recognition of civil society's growing influence in shaping the country's political discourse.

Soon after taking office, Minister Gupta announced that he would live-stream Ministry meetings to promote transparency and citizen engagement—a first for any Nepali ministry. He pledged to make the Youth and Sports Ministry "a space where young voices are heard, not just managed."

Despite the excitement, analysts caution that Gupta faces formidable challenges. The Ministry oversees youth policy, sports development, and coordination with national federations—areas requiring both administrative skill and political navigation. Critics note that while Gupta brings passion and fresh ideas, his limited bureaucratic experience could test his ability to turn activism into effective governance.

Still, his appointment marks a turning point. At just 28, Bablu Gupta becomes the youngest minister in Nepal's history, embodying a new generation's entry into the halls of power—and perhaps, the beginning of a broader shift in how leadership is imagined in the country.
