Look and Gaze Correspondent, Feb 9, 09: This is a picture of a remote villaage Jayapur in Bardiya (Badalpur VDC, Ward No 9, Bardiya, Nepal). During the decade-long Maoist insurgency in Nepal, the Nepal Army operated a cordon and search operation in 11 VDCs of Bardiya district. The 11 VDCs look like an island surrounded by two mighty rivers, Beri and Karnali. It was Dashain (the greatest winter festival in Nepal) time, when the army launched the operation in the area. In the village where I was living for just a week to celebrate the festival, at least eight persons from my village were either killed or disappeared by the state army. Whereabouts of those eight is yet to be declared by the government. The names of the disappeared persons are as follows:
- Basantu Chaudhary
- Bagale Ch
- Lautan Chaudhary
- Mahesh Chaudhary
- Radha Krishna Chaudhary
- Harinarayan Chaudhary
- Min Bahadur Chaudhary
- Dil Bahadur Chaudhary
The victims' families have send these names to the district administration Bardiya but till date the authority has expressed no commitment about declaring the whereabouts of those disappeared and consequent compensation.
